A domain name is the address a person types into their browser in order to visit your website. It is something that you register by the year and never actually own (although nobody can take it away from you once you keep up with the registration).

There are certain qualities a domain name should have depending on the nature of your website and this page is here to provide some helpful information and tools to get the job done.

Here are some Fundamental Ground Rules:

A Domain should not be to long (eg.MyBusinessAboutStuffILikeToDoForFun.com)

Short Names are good but try to ensure that it’s easily remembered, pronounceable and preferably related to your business/subject matter.

Try to include the keywords that a person might use to search for you on the web. (eg. SendFlowersQuick.com)

.com is still regarded as the best TLD (top level domain) followed by.net, then .org. Although country codes such as .co.uk and .ie are fine if the focus of your site is more regional or if it benefits you to associate your site with a country.

Avoid using brand or copy protected names (eg. MyeBayShop.com)

Avoid hyphenated domains (eg. seek-world-peace.com)

Try to avoid prefixes like “the” and “my” and plurals
